For about 2 years, my local newspaper has offered families of the deceased the opportunity to place a photo in their obituary announcement. Since then, my totally informal and unscientific review shows about 10 percent of all obituaries have photos, and of those that do, about 80 percent are black people. Why do we have this situation? By the way, my community is about 65 to 70 percent white.

I’ve noticed another obit oddity. In our local paper, there is a strong correlation between including the photo and listing the cause of death. Today’s paper has 34 obituaries. Three ‘natural’ causes of death are listed; there are pictures with two of those. Deaths in automobile accidents seem to be the exception. They are listed as such, whether or not a picture is published.

I have no idea of how to answer this but to say I think you’re maybe reading a bit much into things. I never pay attention to things like that.
