Until just a couple of years ago, I never realized ‘Jap’ was a derogatory term. Frankly, I can’t ever think of a time I used it, but I had put it in the same category as ‘Brit,’ ‘Aussie,’ ‘Yank’ or ‘Canuck.’ I’m sure there are other examples. Why is ‘Jap’ different? Or are these other short terms for a person’s country also derogatory?

I’m a Japanese woman and believe the term has discriminatory meanings. That’s only because the term was used in wartime, when Japan was dominated by the United States. I have been called, ‘Hey, Jap!’ with an unfriendly smile when I was a college student in the United States. It’s not important if the term has really discriminatory meanings, but what is important is how we, the Japanese, feel when we are called so.
