I recently viewed the Marx Brothers movie ‘A Day at the Races’ (no pun intended) and was intrigued by the musical number that, in its day, would likely have been referred to as ‘the Negro number’. It featured gospel, spirituals, blues, jazz, a Lindy-hop interlude, and Duke Ellington apparently collaborated in the arrangements. That said, it contained offensive stereotypes. I’d like to know how today’s African Americans feel about classic film scenes depicting stereotypes: Do you hate them? Love them? Are they best presented with some background about the history of Black entertainers in the studio system? Should they be censored?
