This article and responses seem to be more geared towards Mexican-Americans & some natives of Central American countries–not necessarily people from other places like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, or Cuba. When you use the term ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Latina(o)’, you should be careful when you make general statements. For example, a quinceneara is different from country to country and even culture to culture. Some of contributors wrote in from his or her point of views, but in ‘their’ Hispanic world, something may work one way, but in my Hispanic world, women are independent and encouraged to go to college. Marriage is important, but it’s not primary, we are expected to make significant contributions to our educations, careers, families, and especially ourselves. My family is cross-cultural, Puerto Rican with strong African-American influence on one side, and pure African-American on the other. My ‘Hispanic’ side is led by a strong, college-educated Matriarch who raised five boys and one girl. Each person was expected to be a valuable part of society, not to just get a job somewhere and raise a family before they ‘lost value’. Besides, today’s television shows are filled with people of all backgrounds who want to get married before they turn 30. In fact, they feel it’s a necessity. Hello… Friends, Ally McBeal, the Bachelor/Bachelorette, Girlfriends, The Nanny, and just about every serial drama. I like the column, but maybe we should expound on the questions and get more details before asking people to answer such vague questions.
