MParticipantTo my understanding, many people of Latino desecent, particularly in the U.S., identify themselves as ‘white Latino’. What on earth does that mean? After living in a Central American country for three years and traveling throughout Central and South America, very rarely did I see any Latinos whom I would describe as ‘white.’ Instead, I saw gorgeous hues of tan, mocha, ebony, cream, latte, brown, yellow; in other words, the entire spectrum of warm darker-toned colors. When I think of the term ‘white’ to describe ethnicity or race, I think of someone strictly of European descent whose skin truly is from the caucasian shades of white; that, in turn, makes me think, that Latinos — almost all of whom clearly have higher levels of melanin in their skin than truly white people — who call themselves white when they clearly don’t have white skin in the least are trying to associate themselves with what they think is the ‘preferred’ color in their minds: White. Thus, I ask the question: Why do too many Latinos who clearly are not white describe themselves with the absurd term ‘white Latino’? Do you truly want to be a white person?
