Do we (black people) really get skin cancer?

When I hear physicians — usually white — talk about skin cancer, they warn that people with darker skin, including blacks, should not believe themselves exempt from this kind of cancer. However, they rarely give statistics or go into cases they’ve seen or known of. In the few pictures I’ve seen of ‘black’ people with skin cancer, the people were exceptionally fair black people. What percentage of skin cancer cases are black? Is it possible we have a much lower rate of the development of this cancer? What of aborigines in Austrailia, the country with the highest rate of skin cancer, do they get it in proportionate numbers? I think it’s possible that dark African skin offers far superior protection from the sun, but scientists are unwilling to admit any benefits in being black.
