I’ve noticed that many (but not all) of my black co-workers never use the word ‘died’, but instead use a variety of euphemisms, such as ‘passed’, ‘went to her reward’, ‘went to the other side’, and even ‘joined her ancestors’. It doesn’t seem to be related to the age of the speaker. A black friend says that this tends to be a lower socio-economic phenomenon in her experience, and a predominantly ‘Southern’ style. Is saying ‘died’ thought to be somehow disrespectful? Unlucky? Crass? Any thoughts welcome.
