Black people often pronounce ‘ask’ as ‘axe,’ and get very upset if questioned about it. Because of that touchiness, no one seems willing to seriously discuss this. The subject came up briefly on ’60 Minutes’ several years ago, but they ultimately dodged giving any kind of answer. Is it cultural, or are there physical differences in the shape of the tongue or palette (sp?) of the average black individual that makes it more difficult to correctly pronounce the word?
