I have often wondered other why people don’t realize that the Anerican race categories of white/caucasian, black, hispanic, and Asian aren’t racial classifications at all. Within the so called ‘white’ group is included tall light haired and eyed Northern Europeans, Eastern Europeans, and the shorter and darker Italians, Greeks, and Arabs. The Spaniards and Portuguese are somehow left out. They are reserved for the so called ‘Hispanic/Latino’ race. This group is probably the most diverse. In it is included pure Spaniards, Portuguese, Argentine Germans, Argentine Italians. All these groups if classified clearly belong in the so called ‘white’ grouping. The hispanic group also includes Native Americans and blacks(from all over Latin America). Mestizos(mixed indian and white) are also present. Mulattos are another group (particularly among Puerto Ricans and a few in Cuba although Cuba is mostly white and black). Latin America is as diverse as the US. The ‘asian’ race is also heterogenous. No sane person would say an Asian Indian is of the same race as a chinese man yet America says they are. In fact indians particularly North Indians more closely resemble the Arabs and Iranians more than East Asians. My whole point is that I believe the whole racial classification system should be abandoned because of the problems with it that I stated above.
