The way I understand it, she can only be sentenced to death for adultery if she was married because she betrayed her husband (or wife, if the man betrayed). Punishment is the same for both sexes unless differerent marital status (man married, and woman unmarried or vice versa). If he/she is unmarried, he/she is punished but not sentenced to death. Furthermore, if she is pregnant, she can’t be punished until the baby is born and nursed. Lastly, as Karim pointed out in a previous message, the circumstances surrounding the case must be taken into consideration. In most cases, family members try to solve the problem without reporting it to authorities. Usually, if both are umarried, they just marry each other and repent. Allah is forgiving and most-merciful.
