It is my understanding that, although polygamy has not been practiced for several centuries among Ashkenazi Jews, until fairly recently a significant number of Sefardi Jews did have two wives. This could have been a reflection of differing Christian and Muslim influences on the two communities. Most Sefardi Jews now find themselves in countries where polygamy is banned by secular law (e.g. Israel, Turkey, United States), but there is still a significant Jewish community in Morocco; does polygamy survive there?
