Does keeping drugs illegal stop addiction? Obviously not. Who would you rather see get a ‘cut of the profit’ – legitimate businesspeople and/or the government (who can impose a tax on it and put more money into our public coffers) – or violent drug lords? We’ve tried to outlaw alcohol, and the result is that laughable social fiasco known as Prohibition. What makes you think the results would be any different if alcohol and narcotics are banned today? Bottom line: People are going to use drugs, including alcohol, no matter what. It’s a fact of life. I can sympathize with your personal problem, but if you accept that addiction is a physical disease – which it is – you also have to accept that people who have this disease were born with the genetic disposition to be addicts. Makes no difference whether the drug of choice is legal or illegal. You’ve given your story, so I’ll give you mine: I am a regular pot smoker and social drinker, and I think I use these two drugs with a degree of responsibility. I smoke pot only at home. I don’t drink and drive. I have had great success at work and last month I won a national award for it. I smoked pot all through college, and was a Phi Beta Kappa. My husband, also a pot smoker, holds a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Not exactly a f**k-it type of couple. Many of our contemporaries also smoke pot (my brother the architect; my friend the businessman; my colleague the magazine editor, et al). Characterizing pot smokers as slackers is a sweeping generalization, and like most stereotypes, is quite untrue.
