I am not sure what you mean by ‘taken aback’ but it seems to me that if a friend or a neighbor has already come into your house, that their reaction as nothing to do with their feelings about your race.. more that they have not seen african art.. and part of it may be your own feelings about the situation… I just got a new car and a couple of my non jewish neigbors said mazel tov to me.. a yiddish expression meaning congratulations.. my first thought is that they are thinking of me as a jew.. but I suspect that they.. as the mojority feel they are being kind or cool… I used to say good morning to some hispanics who work in our building whose first language is spanish… in spanish till it dawned on me that they could and would likely think I first thought of them as spanish and then went from there…and that may be correct.
