Like many speech patterns that are tagged as black English, I think it’s really more accurately described as Southern English. If you listen carefully, you’ll find that “axing” questions and other speech patterns are shared between the races within socioeconomic classes. Many black families have moved from the South only in the last two or three generations – not long enough to shed Southern speech patterns.
