The clerk is simply following his or her boss’s orders and is probably paid minimum wage. When I interact with others in public, I try to show them the kind of respect I want. I always use terms of respect, like ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ when I talk to a customer service employee and I never raise my voice if I disagree. I think obeying basic rules of courtesy gets more accomplished and no one has to be embarrased. My trick is to imagine the employee is my grandmother. If I can’t talk to my grandmother like that, then I won’t talk to anyone else like that.
