The command is to not murder, but I think there is a wider example and pattern set of a much higher view of life than the world normally holds. I think we need to have a respect for all life. All life was created by God and because of that, reflects Him. I am thankful for the food He supplies ( I love BBQ! ) and yet I am keenly aware that I must not take my meals for granted. My daughter caught a tree frog and put it in a bottle, gave it water and leaves, etc., but the next day after she had forgotten about it and it had died, it became a lesson about our responsibility to the nature around us created by God.
