Anita
I am a white female who is more than happy to fling myself from an airplane or ride anything that goes fast and scares the heck out of me. I drive a red sports car, and while I realize it’s not admirable, I tend to do so in a competitive manner.
I am fairly well-educated and upper-middle class, but I was risk-oriented long before my adult social status was determined. I also know many people of all ethnic catagories who are as much or more risk-oriented than me. It’s not about disposable income or race. I believe in large part this is an inherent and integral part of my personality. One of my brothers is very similar. Also, this quality was not discouraged by my parents. I believe this is an important thing as well. We were never told to ‘not get hurt.’ – rather, it was more like, ‘Let ’em do it, they’ll learn then.’ All of us also served in the military. i was in the infantry, and my father was in law enforcement.
Some of it may have more to do with a mundane sameness in the life of adults in this century. I believe we no longer face challenges that allowed us to survive and flourish long ago. Cavemen probably got a major rush just from trying to get dinner stabbed and cooked. We do not. We go to work, fight traffic, watch TV. Yuk. Addiction? Who knows. Make me feel alive? Ooh yeah! But race-oriented? Nope, don’t believe it is.
