Jews are buried horizontally. Trust me, I’ve lost many members of my family and attended over a dozen burials. Cremation is traditionally not permitted by Jewish law, although with the secularization of American Jewry it has grown. The book mentioned that perhaps older Jewish cemetaries have graves closer together because vaults were not required. I don’t know anything about this possibility. But I am absolutely certain that I have never, ever seen a cemetary where Jews were buried vertically.
