I am gay, and have participated in discussions on this topic. I have enjoyed the double-standard that it’s OK for gays to say this to gays, but not in a hateful way. It is very much like the ‘n’ word being used within the culture to diffuse the hateful power it has when coming from outside the culture, but it can also hurt when used within the culture. In any case, it’s the intent of the use of the word that affects its reception. And it’s been bantered around the school ground since long before I was a child – just doesn’t feel nice when it’s used to defame or demoralize you.
