A study was done in Europe recently looking at basketball players. Here’s what they found: on average blacks have 7% more fast twitch muscle fiber and 14% more testosterone than whites. This may allow blacks to jump higher which was indeed found in the study. No difference however was noted in time till exhaustion, which of course does not rely on fast twitch fibers (e.g. most swimming events). The greater amount of testosterone may be responsible for such things as lower body fat amongst black male athletes (not examined in the study I don’t believe), and perhaps larger muscles, both of which are determining factors in sprints.
