While I agree with JGW in a strictly economic sense, he has not addressed my particular situation. A man needs hobbies. If I want to tuck point my own chimney, even though I may not perform as well as a mason, I should not be judged imprudent. I know the cost/benefit ratio and my own occupation is of value. I am involved in construction so I am not without any knowledge. Same goes for cutting my own grass. I may not have all the tools as a landscape crew but can adequately complete the task. I also gain occupation that I may otherwise squander.
