In my experience it’s just because it’s nice to have leg room. i’m 6’3 and i’ll likely take a spot across from anyone rather than right next to them to save space. also if i’m talking to someone at a table, or whatever i always try to sit across from them. i like to look whomever i’m talking to in the eye. when you’re sitting right next to someone with maybe only 8 inches between your heads it suddenly becomes very strange to torque your neck all the way to the side and look talk to someone that way. not to mention i don’t like feeling someones breath on my face when i’m talking to them. i don’t think homosexuality of the possibility thereof, or homophobia are ever a factor.
