Yes, it’s true a shark eats fish and a lion hunts other animals, but the difference is vast between the methods used by other animals and the methods humans use to obtain their meat. Do you see lions domesticating cattle, clearing forests, pumping their meat source with hormones and dumping wastes down rivers? You say meat-eating is part of the natural food chain, while even this could be argued scientifically, there is certainly nothing natural about the method we use to obtain our meat. I will bet that if humans had to hunt their own meat, more than half of the meat-eaters now would convert to vegetarianism. I’ve read several scholarly articles from Nature and Science on the debate on whether humans were meant to be carnivores or whether it’s a lifestyle choice. Many cultures subsist on a vegetarian diet and live much healthier lives than those on meat-based diets. I don’t expect anyone to convert to vegetarianism, it is as much as asking someone to change their faith, but I think it’s important for people to at least be aware of their role (positive and negative) on the so-called food chain. Anyway, to get back to the main point of this topic. I only pointed out meat-eating to show the originator of the topic some reasons why Chinese men or any other people would do things that seem obviously destructive to nature. It is due to ignorance and lack of conviction to change even when valid alternatives are presented to them. For them, it is as hard to change their ways as it is for us to change ours. At least we can find some solace in the fact that there are laws in place to protect the endangered species now.
