The Arkansas case involving the 13-year-old and the two guys didn’t make national headlines because of what seems to be a case of expected stereotyping. Meaning, we aren’t interested in news stories that up hold our beliefs. We’re interested in news stories that shake our held beliefs or that are actually news to us. The fact that gay people are dying at the hands of straight people just isn’t what most of America thinks to be true, thus it is interesting. Most of America thinks gay people hurt kids, thus that is uninteresting. So straight people’s perceptions of gays is a part of the reason for it not getting bigger headlines.
