If it had been the white dude on the left would have you refered to him as the white dude? (Probably not… most would have said.. that guy on the left is the instructor of my spin class… leaving out the part about him being white.) I’m white and to me pointing out someone by ‘feature’ is rude. The fat girl talking to the blonde, the black guy on the right… how about, see that girl over there with really big boobs?… isn’t that offensive? Yeah, so what about just… the guy in red shorts or the guy on the left, or the girl standing closest to the bench press… I gave this a lot of thought last week when I was at the hospital and asked one of the nurses in the hall way a question and she refered me to the ‘black lady’ behind the desk — this one ‘black lady’ was the ONLY one in a printed smock top so why didn’t she just say the lady in the printed top? I think as long as we use color, size, disability or any other personal feature to ‘point out’ people we are going to keep putting people in classifications based on those things we use to point them out. As a child and young adult this was acceptable in our society but as a mother bringing up a child today it isn’t what I want to teach her. I don’t want her to refer to the black kid in her class — I want her to use his/her name if she knows it and if not then point out the color of their shirt or other distinguishing point of reference. JMO
