It’s because ‘Brit’ was never used derogatorily in a mainstream way. Americans seemed to have buried the hatchet with Britain after the Revolutionary War. But World War II propaganda still lingers. I’m sure “Jap” has different connotations in other places, but in America? Ha. I’m not Japanese, but I’ve been called that several times, in addition to ‘chink,’ mostly by either old people who were raised with stereotypes of Japanese as the enemy, or little kids who don’t know better. It’s pretty offensive. Mostly I notice that when I talk with people, they say either ‘Japanese,’ ‘nihon’ (‘Japanese’ in Japanese), or just ‘jay.’ Sometimes they use Jap, but it all depends on the way you use it.
