I feel that part of the problem is that girls are expected to be ‘nice’ and have no socially and philosophically acceptable outlet for “rage” – often intense, murderous, rage. Many people drive as if they are out to kill someone – not much of an outlet but nevertheless much more indulged in by men than women.

It seems to me that these girls are indulging in a form of playing with suicide or self-mutilation as an outlet for the ‘latent rage’ in their system for which they can’t find an acceptable outlet. I wonder what would happen if we had a sport in which women in the audience – possibly a for-women-only sport – could heap abuse and shout contempt at the players and teams they do not like? It would be interesting to compare eating disorders in women and ‘accident’-proneness in women. A woman I know was undergoing a very painful divorce and suddenly became very accident prone – a traffic accident that almost killed her, letting a medical condition go until it almost killed her even though as an ex-wife of a physician she should have known better, etc.
