As an educator for the past 12 years, I’d love to tell you that being homosexual wouldn’t make any difference, but that would be an unfair, unrealistic statement to make, and give you a false outlook upon the world to which you aspire. The respondants here are progressive, open minded people; the majority of the parents with whom you work will not be. Sadly, in the minds of far too many, ‘homosexual’ is congruous with ‘pedophile’. Different is bad. And don’t even let me start in on the evangelical, born again element that believes homosexuality to be a sin: all of these attitudes and more will be overwhelmingly represented by the parents of the children in your classroom.

I ended up the class advisor to my school’s gay/straight alliance simply because I sat next to a *teacher* who was mutting about the ‘sins of homosexuality’ when the need for a gay/straight alliance was broached at a staff meeting. I couldn’t get my hand up quickly enough to volunteer my time when I confronted that attitude in my collegues, who are supposed to treat everyone with impartiality.

Unless wearing a simple gold wedding band is considered a testament to my sexuality choice, I in no way indicate that I am heterosexual. I would suggest that this would be a good way to proceed for any instructor, regardless of sexual preference.
