I understand the difficulties many Native Americans have in regards to poverty, especially since ironically enough some African Americans have the same problem. Both groups were torn away from their original homelands and forced to live lifestyles where they were given no opportunities and substandard everything — schools, jobs, etc. However, there are more and more African Americans who have moved from the ghetto to the suberbs, just like I’m sure there are Native Americans who have become successful. It all depends on where your mind is. Keep in mind too, money is not always necessary to live comfortably. In your post you said many Native Americans work two, three minimum wage jobs… the salary from this would be more than what I make, and I live a very nice middle-class life. More people need to consider the value of roommates, even if whole families have to share houses. I notice this is common for some Hispanic families who live in middle-class neighborhoods along with other immigrants. There IS power in numbers… if you have 5 adults who make $700 a month that’s $3,500, which out here can get you a nice place to stay that is far from poor. So I understand the dilemna of having to deal with a low salary. But sometimes you have to find other solutions to living well that don’t involve trying to get more money, until you’re in the position to do so, of course.
