Hi Kristina: I think you and the original poster are confusing race with culture. Western culture looks like ‘white’ culture to non-whites, because accidents of history, climate, agriculture, etc. resulted in the values of Greek civilization thriving mostly in white countries. These values include things like the rule of law, public debate, individual rights, and separation of church and state. Cultures that have not adopted these values are failing to thrive at this point in history. These countries like to blame their lack of success in this regard on western oppression and privilege. Although, the west and whites have been guilty of oppression and use of white privilege, these things do not account for their success. In fact, no other cultures have done more to advance the causes of individual rights and freedom from oppression than western culture. For example, slavery still exists in Africa and Asia, while all white countries have successfully outlawed it. At the same time no other cultures have brought more material wealth to the world. Mainstream U.S. culture looks white-dominated because whites are the largest minority and because the institutions that make the country run–rule of law, individual rights and freedoms, secular governance–were largely developed in Europe. In the U.S., non-whites who buy into these values thrive and that’s why they can be found in board rooms and management positions all over. Those who don’t buy into these values are choosing to live in the margins of society and often blame their lack of success on others.
