In the four states I have lived in (Midwest and South), the issue of piercing the ears of babies has been a class issue – I have seen only the lowest class of any race piercing their babies’ ears. I myself have always wondered why. As for waiting until one is 16, that is news to me. Most people I know were of school age, usually 5 or 6, at the earliest. This was two fold – responsibility for the care of the piercings AND the safety issue. Babies are more apt to rip out piercings (damaging the hole) or even swallow an earring.
