I don’t understand the laziness thing. It takes as much energy to say axe as it does to say ask. And I don’t understand it as a regional/dialect thing, either. A-s-k pronounced a-x-e is dyslexic more than anything else, it seems to me. It’s not a difference in pronunciation. It’s a difference in perception of the order of the letters … as if the speaker perceives the word to be written as a-k-s. And it confounds me as to how this has a racial basis except as a determined means of differentiating oneself as belonging to a specific (black) race. Honestly, it also says to me that people who prounounce it as axe are axing to be thought of as uneducated. I don’t think Ralph Bunche, Thurgood Marshall or even Michael Jordan say axe. This is the only word I can think of that American non-blacks and many American blacks pronounce differently.
