As an NCO in the USAF I respect everyone as a human being first. There is usually a mutual respect when you give respect first, no matter the form. If I call another NCO a SIR he or she usually won’t say anything because they know I don’t mean any disrespect. It is still respectful. They and I prefer to be called by our rank. I always call Officers Sir or Ma’am or by their rank. NCO’s tell you what needs to be done, they are managers; on the other hand Officers are leaders they make you WANT to do what needs to be done. You’re a civilian so don’t worry about what you call anybody in the military. After your conversation and you did not call them the right thing they will just sigh and say ‘Civilians!’
