My readings indicate that the use of marihuana (mostly by blacks, beatniks, and other insular groups) was tolerated by the white power structure until white, middle-class teenagers began to use it in increasingly larger numbers. When their kids began to turn on, parents weren’t able to relate to these new freedoms.
