I live in Japan, and my wife and many of my Japanese friends are of Korean descent. Most Japanese and Koreans, based on appearance alone, would assume them to be Korean. This happens to my wife, especially when we fly Korean Air via Soeul. Everyone thinks she is Korean and proceeds to speak to her in Korean. On one occasion, a flight attendant began speaking to my wife in Korean, to which my wife replied in English ‘I’m sorry, but I don’t speak Korean’. The flight attendant, looking a little surprised, spoke to me in English and then proceeded to use English to the Korean woman sitting in the window seat. She left looking a little frustrated. After a few flights of this, my wife would just enter the plane, holding her Japanese passport in front of her. It can be confusing for everyone.
