‘When in Rome do as the Romans do.’ ‘Immigrants should assimilate to the predominant culture.’ In a British context, this sounds like a white racist talking. Any black person who voiced these views in Britain would be widely condemned by their own community, they might be accused of being a ‘coconut’: brown on the outside, white on the inside. I doubt if these views would go down well with some communities in the United States e.g. the Hispanics. This issue does raise some important differences between the black experience in Britain and the United States. The logic of your own position is that you should start learning Navajo or Sioux or Cherokee. I agree that teachers should be sensitive about what they call their pupils, but that was not quite the issue here.
