We do it in the Deep South, too. Grandmother didn't allow dirty shoes on her carpet. I still find myself doing it in others' homes. Thankfully, my socks are clean and without holes AND my feet don't smell like bologna (couldn't resist).

PS: Incidentally, the 'whites smelling like wet dogs when it rains' thing is probably because of the many hair care products we use. I've noticed that funky smell, too. It's the hairspray I use. Ugh!
