Rather than debate semantics I’ll answer your question. Why do whites use stereotypes? Stereotypes are a useful tool for comprehending and digesting what our eyes see and our ears hear of the world around us. On the back end, stereotypes allow the mind to quickly assess and reach a broad, if not wholly accurate, understanding of a given situation. Stereotyping could be said to be the essential link between the reflexive unconscious and the cognizant, investigative mind. Stereotypes are legitimate and healthy so long as they 1) only serve in place of a more thorough and educated understanding based on verified facts, 2) are understood to be inherently open for amendment, reduction, and outright discarding when new information is introduced, and 3) one never presumes to apply a stereotype directly to an individual, for as animals with ‘feelings’ we are all entitled to the illusion of individuality. Stereotypes should never be made a standard of law or official policy. There are those that dismiss stereotyping as a vestigial trait from pre-sentient thought. A trait one can simply evolve up from through sheer will. I think that’s simple. A person who professes that they have no prejudices or stereotypes has no credibility. Such a person does not exist. I expect to get ten responses from people who imagine themselves to be more evolved than to rely on stereotypes who rely on them everyday. White people use stereotypes. It’s a fundamental protocol of the human mind. The use of stereotypes is not exclusive to the white race, but being taken to task for it is. While a European American can’t ask a question about how African Americans cross the street without being shouted down, African Americans never have to answer to their prejudices toward Koreans and Mexicans, nor for sexism and homophobia. Note that I’m not talking about ‘reverse racism’, there’s no merit to the idea that whites suffer from black resentment and racism towards whites. But it does strike me as odd that the pogroms on Korean stores and neighborhoods during nearly every major urban riot of the twentieth century have never been described as such. I think that’s how the Irish became ‘white’. So I turn the question to you: is bigotry a right that one gains access to only after being oppressed onesself? What level of oppression is necessary? Can a Bosnian refugee come here and be bigoted and still gain appproval?
