Lizzy, may I offer a gentle reminder? Not all Christians are Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell or Whatzhername who hates her own gay son. It hurts me when you lump me in with “those hateful, bigotted Christians” — I know you didn’t use those words, but then, you didn’t really have to. There are many people of strong religious faith who sincerely believe that homosexuals are choosing to live a life of sin that will cut them off from God’s promise of eternal life. These are not “homophobes” in the common sense of the word. They believe that the loving response to such people is to try to convince them of their error and help them come into a relationship with God that will fit them for heaven. I’m not saying they are right. I’m just saying that many Christians believe this, and are very sincere and compassionate in that belief. There are many people who use a veneer of Christianity to hide their political ambitions or hatreds. God is not pleased with such hypocrisy. Now, the most important thing I want to say: Not all Christians think that way about homosexuality. Many of us understand that God has created all people in God’s image, including homosexuals. Jesus never condemned homosexuals, and if I have to make a choice between what Jesus said and what Paul said, I choose Jesus.
