Six of one and half a dozen of the other. White gays are often racist IMHO because they assume that black men and women are homophobic. Black gay men of my acquaintance have told me how hard it is for them to accept their sexuality and to come out, many Caribbean islands outlaw homosexuality and I have heard black men and women saying that homosexuality is limited to the white middle classes. However, I live in Brixton London which had a huge Caribbean and African British population and also one of the largest proportion of gays and lesbians in the country (so the local council claims, but how they know is beyond me). I have NEVER been abused on the street despite wearing some interesting outfits. Despite my neighbour playing ‘Burn the Batty’ at full volume several times a week for my benefit, each time I meet a black or white face, I assume they are tolerant unless they prove otherwise. PS I’ve just bought a very loud sound system and play Que Sera back at a deafening volume.
