I, too, grew up in Kentucky. People from more urbanized parts of the US (especially the urban Northeast) tend to lump all the Southern states together and dismiss them as backward and ignorant. This isn’t true, and besides, Kentucky is not all that Southern. The state roughly divides into three regions: the legendary ‘Bluegrass’ area around Lexington and Louisville, the eastern mountain area that more resembles West Virginia, and the western portion of the state that is more like neighboring Illinois or Indiana. (There are also the Cincinnati suburbs which are overwhelmingly German, Catholic, and Midwestern.) The state is not quite Southern and not quite Midwestern but incorporates some of the best features of both regions. So why do Northeasterners dismiss the whole area as something out of ‘Deliverance’? Answer: they don’t understand it, they don’t want to understand it, and they need someone to whom they can feel superior. Add to this the material it gives to would-be journalists and stand-up comics. Say what they will, Kentucky is a great place to be from! (PS: when I was growing up, I remember everyone from the Northeast being lumped together as ‘New Yorkers’. It cuts both ways!)
