I know you wanted to hear from the under 30s readers, but as a parent, I encourage all teens to talk with their parents about getting a checking (and savings) account at age 16 and a credit card at age 18 (usually from same bank as checking account and with a $300 limit). One parent will have to co-sign for each. And while the teens are still at home let them use and maintain their accounts and learn their lessons from their parents instead from a trashed credit bureau report. My son is now 20 and can walk in anywhere, apply for and get credit, and knows how to manage it. I still advise him and I’m very proud of him.
