Blindness is often thought of as total darkness, but that’s not actually the case. Most people who are “functionally” blind – can’t drive a car, for example, or read a newspaper without assistive tools – do have some light perception. Macular degeneration causes blindness, but only kills the central vision.

A wonderful book about what that kind of sight is like is called Sight Unseen (Yale University Press, 1999.)
