‘Do you assume that because someone makes a hefty annual salary and drives a Mercedes, they’re paying their bills?’ Well, since I pay my bills before I buy anything else, yes, I do make that assumption. I live in an affluent neighborhood (albeit in the ‘affordable housing’ part) and I never cease to be amazed at the houses, SUVs, luxury cars, grocery carts full of gourmet foods, and so on. I often remark to my wife that I cannot fathom ‘where all that money comes from’ and I just make the assumption that in households with an income in the six figures, people pay their bills first and then buy all of these ‘goodies’ with the prodigious amounts of cash that they have left over. But I can now see that I am looking at this with tunnel vision. We save first, then pay the bills, then live very frugally, and only go into debt when it’s absolutely necessary. If I made $100,000 per year, I would save at least half of it and provide for an even more secure (and earlier!) retirement than I do now.
