When a straight person uses the word ‘gay’ as a pejorative, it has nothing to do with literal homosexuality. It arises because of an ingrained negative connotation between ‘gay’ and ‘bad’. Calling a movie gay, is simply calling it bad. True, this perpetuates anti-gay feeling, if only at a subconcious level, but it is a word that is resolutely entrenched in the American lexicon(and also, evidently, in many other places). I think that if you are offended by the word’s usage, you should not employ it or associate with those who do. This way you will minimize your exposure to it. BTW, many people use ‘gay’ without thinking of its etymology. They think of it as being synonymous with bad or abnormal, and are not being intentionally homophobic. Just like an American will use the phrase ‘going to the bathroom’ to signify an action completely divorced from the literal meaning!
