I’ve been smoking for years and I find it impossible to cut down to less than 1 per day, or I suck nicotine lozenges. Like the earlier poster there is depression and other mental illness (schizophrenia) in my family, who are all chain smokers. I suffer with depression myself and know it is at its worst when I try hardest not to smoke. I’ve read some recent research indicating that nicotine can stimulate neurons in the brains of people suffering from schizophrenia; even some that indicates people who smoke heavily during their teenage years and early adulthood are less likely to develop schizophrenia. Almost all schizophrenia sufferers smoke which I believe gives them a temporary clarity. I hope that medical science can develop the practical implications of this and discover the active ingredients so people like us can keep our mental equilibrium and our health too.
