So IS Ebonics a separate language? As far as I understand it people who speak Ebonics also know the standard dialect of the English language. Even children watch T.V. and learn that Ebonics is not acceptable in every situation. They don’t see black professional news reporters speaking Ebonics on the nightly news or perhaps when they go to their black neighborhood doctor. It may be acceptable in everyday interaction with family and friends, but not in professional circumstances. Comparing ESL to Ebonics a false analogy because Spanish is an actual language that stems from another country and Spanish speaking children do not understand English at first so they do need extra funding and teachers who are able to teach them. Whereas Ebonics is a slang of the standard English language and these children already understand standard english, even if they don’t elect to use it. Therefore extra funding is not needed to teach them with Ebonics. Where extra funding is needed is in the lower class areas for more teachers and less students per teacher, but not necessarily ones that speak Ebonics. Declaring Ebonics a separate language, would be to promote slang. You could compare it to teaching with slang street Spanish in Mexico, which simply does not happen, instead they teach with scholarly Spanish in order that the children learn what is correct from early on.
