We’re stuck between a rock and a hard place with this one. Our policy should be backing both groups (Nationalist Muslims/Nationalist Jews) or neither. It’s a shame Israel wasn’t stuck anywhere else. I think what was important was giving the Jews a nation-state of their own, not giving them ancient Israel, per se. I think we should have tried the Liberia theory on this problem: Buy a whole lot of land in some arbitrary location and start calling it a country. That would have satisfied the Jewish desire for the security of a nation without fueling the Theo-Nationalism that makes the Israelis such cruel warlords. Of course, the Islamic countries haven’t been very open-armed, either. Every time the Israelis let up, the Muslims attack Israel. It could have been avoided by putting Israel ANYWHERE else. Sigh; too late now, I suppose.
