In the situation you describe, I would have asked the person what they meant by a movie being ‘gay.’ Was it about gay people? Did it have gay characters? If it didn’t, what about it makes them think its gay? A lot of times people don’t really think about the terms they use and what they really mean or what they think it means. I work with high school students and I’ve noticed that the word ‘gay’ is often used to mean ‘not like me or the people I hang out with’ in a negative way. But if you challenge the students on their use of the word, they usually have a hard time being any more explicit.
