I have friends who are lesbians in Singapore. They tell me that Asian women often hold hands and show affection in public. This does not mean they are lesbians. In the United States, unless you are in a gay/lesbian friendly area, most of the same-sex couples showing affection are usually not gay. Fear still prevents many gays and lesbians from bringing unwanted attention to themselves.
